In a way we are all proxies. We are beings capable of directing energy, but we do not always source that energy ourselves. It is much more like in Star Wars, where the Force can be used by both the Jedi and the Dark ones, as a tool for their dealings. And while it is tempting to go the dark route because it promises untold power, it will also navigate you into a reality that is hard to escape.
The other side is more the Star Trek way: the light tries to help, but will not interfere unless asked. The Prime Directive is all about not accelerating species that may not have grown on their own in such a way they can actually discover the facts of life for themselves, and deal with them in a proper manner.
