If you don't know your own darkness, then stepping into the light won't do you any good. Because in the end only you can decide to step out of your darkness. Doing so does not always mean giving up all of the deep secrets, but it does involve balancing out the Karma that such darkness invokes. Oddly enough right this very moment the episode of the BlackList I am watching has Tom Keen saying: "If I have a quest it is to shine a light on your darkness" to Raymond Reddington.
But are we here to shine a light on other people's darkness, or should we be be more concerned about our own darkness? I am all in favor of opening my mind to let the light shine in, and thus allow it to extinguish the darkness. But that does not directly mean influencing the outside world. The weird thing about the Grand Overall design is that when you change your inside world, the outside environment is changing with it. Kinda like the mirror smiling back at you when you decide to smile...
