Will we ever be able to extend reality beyond the grim reaper also known as the Great Filter? It's the idea that there is at least one extremely difficult boundary for a civilization to pass.
Observing the last few months, I'd say it's not just one filter, but a sort of hurdle race, where every limit we run into gets solved sooner and sooner because of the accelerating artificial intelligence, only to be replaced by the next one.
Moore's Law was exponential in its nature, as it only took one metric into consideration, which was the amount of transistors per processor. But the truth of computer technology is that it is the product of several related developments that are each exponential in nature: memory, speed, communication, new software which processes information more efficiently...
And lately, this combination has pushed AI into an arms race, which could of course lead to the development of ferocious weapons, even ones that are autonomous. So yes, it could go wrong, but the better solutions are also surfacing instantly.
