When I ended up having to fill in this page, the first line that came to mind was: : There 's a hole in my heart that can only be filled by you :, made famous by the band named extreme in their song hole hearted. But holography is a totally different concept from :hole-ography:, as it is much more :whole-ography:.
Today's kids are used to seeing holograms, and a few piece of clear plexiglass and a video display are enough to make one. But few know the principle of holograms made with old-fashioned chemical film and coherent laser light : the resulting film will show its projected image when lit with a normal spotlight, but the image won't be shown on a flat surface. Instead the object seems to protrude from the lighted film on both ends, reproducing a 3D replica of the object in mid-air!
But the remarkable aspect of holographic film is not that, but this: cut the film into pieces and shine a light on them, and all pieces will produce the entire image , as all the information has been recorded across the entire film surface, unlike normal 2D photograpic film. Reality is like this, its information is spread all along the infinite reaches of the universe , a concept which by some is called the akashic records.
