All of man's creations require maintenance, and the more complex the ctechnology, the more involved the maintenance become. That is why pyramids still stand today, while normal houses from the last century are all breaking down unless their inhabitants are actively maintaining it.
And that is why engineers are valuable: in a dire situation they have the knowledge to do such maintenance, and do the McGyvering needed to make stuff work again.
