The physicist Max Planck said:
"New scientific ideas never spring from a communal body, however organized, but rather from the head of an individually inspired researcher who struggles with his problems in lonely thought and unites all his thought on one single point which is his whole world for the moment."
On the one hand, he was probably right, and some might see this as their purpose. On the other hand, we can't all be that individually inspired to such deep thought. But what is a worthy purpose is to keep communicating our thoughts clearly and peacefully, instead of arguing and fighting over our diferences.
