Having tools others don't is a surefire cause for the arrival of requests from those that don't have them. I've recently bought a 3D printer again, and one of my children immediately came up with a slew of things she wanted to have printed! She understood of course that my time and the running of the machine is hers to request for free, but 3D printers run on spools of plastic that may be relatively cheap, but not free. So she instead ordered he own roll of filament.
I've always been the guy who buys the tools not just because I can use them, but to have them available for others. Did that come from a trauma in my past? Perhaps, and if I had to point to it I would pick the one day I was driving home from work and ran into a huge traffic jam. The commute was very long, over two hours, and that disaster made me unfashionably late. I noticed the car in front of me was using a mobile phone, which back then was far from established tech. So I went over to the guy and politely asked if I could quickly phone my wife I'd be home late. He said no, and I noticed I would have said yes if the roles had been reversed.
Am I that good? Nah, just an average guy, no better or worse than others...
