It's around this time of year that the memes about Skynet emerge again, because of the revelation that was done in Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
The T-800 explains: "The Skynet Funding Bill is passed. The system goes online August 4th, 1997. Human decisions are removed from strategic defense. Skynet begins to learn at a geometric rate. It becomes self-aware at 2:14 a.m. Eastern time, August 29th. In a panic, they try to pull the plug." Sarah then responds: "Skynet fights back."
I myself do not believe one second in the nature of Skynet. What I believe is that the concept was made popular to make us believe that the Sky is the Limit, literally. But as the saying goes, that is woefully untrue: the Sky is far from the limit, but rather only the beginning!
