The idea that microsoft and other tech companies are spying on us is a widespread idea, yet not many people actually worry about it. I myself don't feel that threatened by it either, but sometimes I wonder...
Like last week I added page counting to my website, mainly to see how many pages got hit, and which pages got hit most. Then this morning I added a check for the IP address of the visitor, and apparently not a moment too soon: a few hours later the logfile had registered over 800 hits, where normally 50 a day was the average over the last week. And of these 800,over 750 were the result of one single IP address.
Having gotten curious, I asked Grok about the IP address, and it told me the IP address 20.171.207.86 originates from the United States, specifically associated with Microsoft Corporation in Redmond, Washington. I also asked it about the time distribution of the page visits, and they were inverse exponential: most less than one second apart, a bunch two seconds, some three seconds, but none longer than four seconds apart.
Still, it could have been anything: a bored software engineer that just found the site, some webcrawler program that visited a bunch of pages, so even while fascinating, it is not a case worth investigating furhter.
