Just like Earth is but a third rock from the Sun which circles the Milky Way galaxy in one of its spiral arms, human beings are just a certain species of animal life living upon that litle blue marble. We may have had far more impact upon this planet's nature than other species, but does that make us better?
Or are we distinctive just because we are on the edge between biological and technological life? The most interesting things often occur on boundaries, just like life happens on the thin outer layer of the planet, rather than in the core of the planet, or out there in space. Are we indeed quickly growing towards that moment when we have to extend beyond this planet? I guess time will tell...
