Nowadays, people are being "redpilled", but to others around them, they seem conspiracy theorists. Of course there is the concept of perpective, where both sides can be right at the same time, and still they completely disagree.
What the Matrix showed us is that in reality there is no choice, and of course this was discovered before. Basically, it is the concept of humans holding two or more conflicting concepts in their mind without necessarily being drawn into one or the other.
